Vienna, the sleeveless vest revisited

The sleeveless vest is a must-have in a child's wardrobe: it keeps them warm without restricting their mobility. So, our design studio decided to create our own version of this garment, and to be completely honest, we're in love with this pattern. Vienna is a very iconic ikatee pattern: a simple model, the classic shepherd's vest, revisited to give it multiple and very trendy options.

Vienne is a fully lined unisex sleeveless vest pattern. It's available in sizes 1 month to 4 years for Vienne, and in sizes 3 to 12 years for Vienne Kids. The sewing level is easy to intermediate. This is also our first video-projectable pattern: the file is provided to you when you purchase the PDF version of the pattern.

One pattern, several versions

Thanks to the different options in this pattern, you can play around with different versions depending on the season and the materials! A tutorial video is available online to guide you through the sewing process of this pattern. We also invite you to watch the introduction to this video to help you choose your materials and keep all the options in mind.

5 neckline options: V-neck, round neck, ribbed collar, classic hood, tie hood

2 pocket options: patch pockets, side pockets

4 types of closures: button + strap, tie, brandenburg, zip

Vienna, shepherd's vest

As usual at ikatee, we love to play with options and materials. Let's start with the shepherd's vest in its classic version, made of fur or sherpa lined with cotton. This is the simplest version to make. It can be reversible depending on the chosen closure method. The fabrics used are available on our website, to be paired with Liberty, gingham, or even printed double gauze for the lining.

Vienna with hood

Now let's move on to the more sportswear-oriented and perhaps slightly more technical versions. Don't worry, nothing too difficult: our tutorial booklet and step-by-step video are here to help you. To continue perfecting our quilting technique (see our last tutorial video), we played with fabrics. This also adds warmth to the garment thanks to the wadding.

Here, Vienne is made from an electric blue milleraies velvet and lined in heather gray French Terry. Our stylist's little touch was to quilt only the upper part of the front in a straight line to emphasize the placement of the pockets and to create the hood with the lining fabric. We love this very "little guy" version and our model loves it too!

We also tested diamond quilting for a very "country-chic" version of Vienna! Our lichen green milleraies velvet matches perfectly with the khaki Liberty Wiltshire. To give the vest a sportswear touch, we opted for a hood in thick heather gray sweatshirt. The zipper and patch pocket options were chosen here.

Vienna, sleeveless down jacket

Our design studio has combined down jackets and Sherpa for these stylish sleeveless jackets, both key winter fabrics! This should be a particular hit with older children. Here, the sleeveless vest's lining is made from down, the collar is in matching ribbing, and the zipper is included.

On the technical side, you'll find an article dedicated to sewing the down jacket on our website, a permanent story on Instagram, and the assembly is also explained in the tutorial video. While sewing this material isn't that complicated, installing the zipper on Sherpa is a bit more technical. You can opt for a toggle closure or buttons and straps to simplify the project.

Vienna and its pretty bow

A little favorite feature of this pattern that really sets it apart is the tie-up hood. To achieve a nice tie-up effect, you'll need to choose relatively thin fabrics. Vienne is made here in more summery fabrics: French Terry and jersey. You could also opt for winter fabrics and a thin, contrasting fabric to create the tie. This version is reversible for a variety of looks!
