There are clothes you can slip on in thirty seconds in the morning without thinking, yet still look carefully dressed: the jumpsuit is one of them. A long version for summer evenings, a romper version for running around without a second thought, it is THE versatile piece of the beautiful season. Good news: it sews very well at home, provided you choose the right pattern. At ikatee, we take you on a journey to discover MARIEKE MUM, our favorite pattern for sewing jumpsuits, rompers, and even dresses all from the same base.
Why the jumpsuit is the most cost-effective pattern of the summer
Before grabbing the scissors, a word on what makes the jumpsuit so interesting to sew. Unlike a dress or pants, it is worn as a single piece: no need to match a top and bottom, the look is already done. It suits both a terrace lunch and a summer evening, depending on the fabric and length chosen. And above all, a single well-designed pattern allows you to multiply versions: long sleeves or sleeveless, long legs or romper, ruffles or not. This is exactly the spirit of the MARIEKE MUM pattern.
MARIEKE MUM: one pattern, three garments
MARIEKE MUM is an ikatee pattern designed in collaboration with labO d'Isa, created for versatility. With the same basic pieces, you can make:
A long jumpsuit, for a dressed-up look that transforms from day to night depending on the fabric chosen. A romper, shorter and cooler, perfect for hot days. And even a low-waisted dress with a bloused effect, if you feel like a flowing skirt rather than pants during sewing.
The garment opens with a front button placket, the waist is elasticated at the back (which solves a good part of fitting issues), and you can choose between long sleeves or sleeveless depending on the season. Ruffles are offered as an option in different places to personalize the final look. The pattern is available from size 34 to 46, in PDF format to print or project, or in paper envelope, for an intermediate to advanced sewing level.

Which fabric to choose for your jumpsuit or romper
The choice of fabric completely changes the garment’s look; it’s even the most fun variable to play with this pattern.
For a fluid and summery jumpsuit, go for a lightweight poplin, batiste, double gauze, or viscose crepe: these fabrics drape well and let the loose fit of the top breathe. For a more structured version, a light linen or fine jacquard gives a nice drape while keeping shape. Want a more comfortable version, like a chic pajama jumpsuit? Milano, jersey, or soft French terry work very well, provided you stick to fabrics that don’t sag too much at the elasticated waist.
For supplies, plan a lightweight fusible interfacing for the facings, five buttons of 11 to 12 mm for the button placket, a 3 cm flat elastic for the waistband, and bias tape to finish the armholes if you choose the sleeveless version. Piping or a decorative cord can add a nice finishing touch to the waistband.
Key steps to succeed with your jumpsuit
Three points deserve special attention when sewing MARIEKE MUM for the first time.
First, the facing of the top: it structures the entire bust and conditions the characteristic bloused drape of the pattern, so it’s best to take time to press and adjust it well before continuing. Second, the button placket: a clean opening requires precision when marking and topstitching, but the tutorial details each step carefully. Third, the elasticated waistband at the back: it provides all the garment’s comfort, so take time to evenly distribute the gathers for a regular result.
If your stature differs from a standard size, don’t worry: the video tutorial includes explanations for length adjustments, a valuable help for petite or tall statures who often need to adjust this type of one-piece garment.
The video tutorial to not miss any step
As with all ikatee patterns, MARIEKE MUM comes with a complete video tutorial covering every assembly step: attaching the facing, assembling the ruffles, sewing the elasticated waistband, making the button placket, and the Italian pockets. This is especially useful for an intermediate to advanced pattern like this one, where seeing the technique often saves precious time compared to just the paper instructions.
Your turn to sew
Whether you choose the long and dressed-up version, the summer romper, or the bloused dress, MARIEKE MUM is one of those patterns you sew multiple times in different fabrics because the results vary so much from one version to another. It’s also a chance to build a true summer wardrobe base, handmade and perfectly fitted to you.
